Cole Clark - some facts

As one of the biggest Cole Clark dealers in the world, the staff at Sky Music hears some funny comments and ideas from customers from time to time regarding their ideas of what Cole Clark guitars are all about.
So we’ve decided to put a few points up here to help give punters a better understanding of one of our favourite brands – Cole Clark.

Silly customer comment 1 – “That Cole Clark guy used to be at Maton and stole their ideas.”
No. For starters, that “Cole Clark guy” is two people, Adam Cole and Bradley Clark, and yes they were one employed to build guitars with Australian guitar makers Maton.
Their ideas about how guitars should be built differed to their peers at Maton, and after their time with Maton came to an end they decided to explore the possibility of establishing their own guitar manufacturing business.
While Adam Cole decided to pursure other interests not too long after the Cole Clark brand was established, Bradley Clark pushed on and built a strong brand using building techniques and concepts that had never been seen before from any brand, anywhere in the world.

Silly customer comment 2 – “Cole Clark is just some off-shoot of Maton.”
Again…no. Maton itself is an iconic musical instrument manufacturer based in Melbourne – There is no partnership, or even unofficial relationship between the two companies.
We get pretty tired of the conversations about links between the two companies – realistically Cole Clark has nothing to do with Maton and vice versa.

Silly customer comment 3 – “The cheap Cole Clark’s have ply-wood back and sides”
Very wrong. One of the fundamentals upon which Cole Clark is built, is the exclusive use of solid timbers to build every instrument.
Laminate plywood is a common feature of entry-level and intermediate guitars from many famous brands but at Cole Clark, they have never used plywood on their guitars and never will.

Silly Customer Comment 4 – “I played a Cole Clark once, it was shit.”
Nice one mate, guess what – I’ve played a shit Gibson before, I’ve played a shit Martin before and I’ve played a shit Maton before! If you’re going to make your mind up about a brand from playing one guitar then I’m sorry, but you’re simply foolish!
As much as it would annoy every brand I deal with to say this, it is a fact that every now and then a dud will slip through the cracks and end up on a rack somewhere for all to mock.
Here at Sky Music we personally select all of our Cole Clark stock, so we 100% guarantee that every one of our Cole Clarks is a ripper!

Silly customer comment 5 – “The Fat Lady 2 sounds bigger and better than the Fat Lady 1”
So many customers don’t understand that the many different combinations used by Cole Clark create a wide range of different tones.
To just say “I need a Fat Lady 2” all you’re really doing is identifying that you want block inlays and a tortoiseshell pickguard!
A Fat Lady 2 with a Spruce top and Blackwood back/sides is going to sound extremely different to the same model built with a Bunya top and Maple back/sides.
It is important for a customer to try out several timber configurations to find the right sound for them.
